Merle marvels to win U23 World Championship • World Triathlon

Merle se corona Campeona Mundial Sub23 en una final electrizante

El título del Campeonato Mundial Sub23 ITU femenino fue para Audrey Merle que superó a su compatriota francesa en la alfombra azul en una final electrizante.

Pisando los talones de Merle, literalmente, su compatriota Leonie Periault se quedó con la medalla de plata. Melanie Santos (POR) llegó para el bronce, algo sumamente gratificante esta semana en la que la estrella olímpica de Portugal Vanessa Fernandes fue homenajeada en el Salón de la Fama de la ITU.

Las atletas se midieron en una carrera sprint debido a condiciones climáticas imprevistas, distancia que obliga a las atletas a alcanzar mucha velocidad.

La etapa de natación se acortó a una sola vuelta, y las mujeres comenzaron su día de acción con una zambullida en el Lago Michigan, cuya temperatura hizo necesario el uso de trajes de neopreno. La mexicanaLizeth Rueda Santos logró una ventaja de 20 segundos camino a la T1.

Natalie Van Coevorden (AUS) siguió a Rueda en la salida de la transición y pudo formar un pelotón en la etapa en bicicleta. A mitad del recorrido, veíamos a 12 mujeres pedaleando, entre ellas Rueda, Merle, Avery Evenson (USA), Johanna Gartman (USA), Shiho Sato (JPN), Chloe Cook (GBR) y Dominika Jamnicky (CAN).

Cuando sonó la campana al final del segmento en bicicleta, cuatro perseguidoras llegaron hasta las líderes para formar un grupo de 16 atletas en la T2, y relegar la esperanza del podio a las dos vueltas pedestres. Merle corrió con determinación y se fue desprendiendo de sus rivales. Periault fue con ella y las dos francesas permanecieron juntas hasta el final.

Ambas mujeres esprintaron a lo largo de la recta final y Merle pudo imponerse por una fracción de segundo. Merle había ganado el bronce en el Campeonato Mundial Juvenil 2014 por lo que este título es muy especial en su ingreso a la nueva clase deportiva.
